The Russian Junior National team is undefeated in the qualification round of the 2004 European Championships, which are currently being held in the Bulgarian city of Yambol. Two representatives of the Army club are playing with the Russian team - forwards Nikita Shabalkin and Nikita Kurbanov. In the first game (Russia-Bulgaria: 76-70), Shabalkin scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Kurbanov had 15 points and 9 rebounds.
In today’s victory over Hungary (76-64), both players put up more modest statistics: 6 points apiece. Kurbanov added two rebounds, while Shabalkin had four rebounds and four steals.
After two games the Russians are tied for first with Israel. Tomorrow our junior team will face group underdog Cyprus.
