The opening of the first street basketball court constructed under the Moscow mayor’s "Basketball in Every Courtyard" program was held today in the capital’s central district at 12 Tryokhgorny Val.
Participating in the ceremony were mayor Yury Luzhkov, central administrative district official Gennay Degtev, PBC CSKA president Alexander Gomelsky and PBC CSKA general dicrector Sergey Kushchenko.
The idea of the construction of such a series of courts came from Gomelsky, and the first one was built of his initiative.
Luzhkov had the honor of opening the court by taking the first shot. In his address, Luzhkov announced that "the construction of such courts is one of the necessary and realistic steps to attract the younger generation to sports in general and basketball specifically."
In the future there are plans to open other street basketball courts in the city’s courtyards.
